The Scout Group was started in October 1944, under Mr T. O. Chalk, the Group's  first Scout Master. At first the Cub Pack and Scout Troop meetings took place at a hall in West Street. The size of the hall was only 32ft by 12ft, which meant that at the most, only 20 boys could be reasonably accommodated at a time. The Group's numbers soon rose to 50 and in March 1945 the Group's Committee, realised that bigger premises would be needed. The Committee was  interested in a barn in the grounds of Ewell Park Hospital, that could be used as the Group's Scout Headquarters. The Matron was approached and readily agreed, but the matter had to be referred to Epsom & Ewell Council, followed by Surrey County Council, which eventually leased a piece of land to the Group.

A hut was purchased from the 8th Wimbledon Scout Troop, transported, erected on the site and was in use by October 1947. In June 1948 the Group's Senior Troop was formed under the Leadership of Mr Ledwich.

The Group later moved to a hut in Elmwood Drive Stoneleigh, but by 1963 the need for new premises and a more secure lease was urgently required. The Group formed a Building Committee to plan and negotiate the Group's move to  new headquarters adjacent to "Bluegates" in the London Road Ewell. It was the result of co-operation between Epsom & Ewell Borough Council and the Group's then parents who helped with the decorating and building, that on Saturday 22nd April 1967, its new headquarters was opened. It consisted of two buildings that were later joined together by an extension. In time, garages were added and the site developed.

By 1987 the lease had expired on that site, but the Group's Committee had been active and carefully negotiating with the Council, for new land and accommodation. It is due to their foresight and dedication, along with the assistance of the Council, that the Group now has a modern purpose built headquarters on its present site which was opened in May 1989.
Over the past 75 years there have been many changes in the structure of both the Scout movement and the 4th Ewell. A Venture Scout Unit and Beaver Colony  have been started to extend the age range of Scouting in the Group. Together with the Scout Troop and Cub Pack, the Group has grown to its present size of over 100, catering for age ranges from 7 to 20 and draws its membership predominantly from Ewell, Stoneleigh, Worcester Park and Cheam. Within the Group there are Leaders of both sexes; Girls have been able to join the Venture Unit for some time and last year the Group decided that Girls could be admitted to the Scout Troop.
The 4th Ewell is one of the most successful Scout groups in the District and regularly enters all of the major competitions that take place in the Epsom District Scouts. In the last year the Group has won the following District Scout competitions: 5 - A - Side Football Trophy, Track Cart Competition, Tin Can Trophy, Night Hike Trophy and from the aggregate of  the points gained from the positions in each of the District Scout Competitions, the 4th Ewell has again won the District Challenge Trophy. As well as the District Scout Competitions, the Group has also had winning Patrols in the County Camping Competition individual wins in the County Swimming Gala, and in September, a team from the Group came 3rd nationally in the Dragon Boat at Marlow. Recently the Group gained 3 Chief Scout Awards, 5 Queen's Scout Awards (the highest award in Scouting) and 5 of their Scouts have just completed the Chief Scout's Challenge.

The 4th Ewell's Leaders aim to achieve a fair balance between responsibility, training and fun. The badge courses run within the Group cover a wide range of subjects, e.g. Fire Fighting, First Aid, Airman, Mechanics etc.; often both fun and training come together with outdoor activities like canoeing, abseiling, camping and orienteering.
You will see from this short history of the 4th Ewell that it is a part of the community and has been so for a very long time. 2019 will be a special year for the Group as it will be celebrating its 75th Anniversary by a series of events throughout the year when it is hoped that previous members and friends of the Group will be able to meet and swap reminiscences old and new. The Group would be pleased to  make contact with past members and friends of the Group and would also like to see any historical information, photographs, documents etc. that anyone can offer, regarding its 75 years in Ewell.
