About us
Trusted to make life better
4th Ewell (Nonsuch) Scout Group was established in 1945, and has been providing high quality Scouting to young people aged between 6 and 18 years old in the local area for over 65 years. We believe in helping our Members to fulfil their potential by working in teams, learning by doing and thinking for themselves. We give people of every background the chance to stretch themselves, learn new skills and make lifelong friends.
The Group Headquarters in Bluegates, London Road, Ewell is the hub of weekly meetings during term time. 4th Ewell is a highly resourced Group complimented with an excellent Leadership Team and Executive Committee. We're a mixed-sex, multi-faith Group, working hard to make Scouting available to all. |
Where we fit in
4th Ewell is one of fourteen Scout Groups in Epsom and Ewell, which is one of nineteen Districts in Surrey. The UK makes up one of the 216 countries in the worldwide family of scouts. There are over 400,000 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers in the UK, who are supported by over 100,000 adult volunteers. This makes Scouting by far the largest youth organisation in the country. Around the world over 28 million people are members of a scout group.
Scouting in Epsom and Ewell is supported and overseen by our District Commissioner (DC), Karl Nicholas, who is supported by a number of Assistant District Commissioners (ADCs).

What we do
The purpose of Scouting is to contribute to the development of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, social, and spiritual potential as responsible citizens and members of their local, national and international community. Through the adventure of Scouting, our young people get to learn new skills, try exciting activities, have their first taste of responsibility and take risks in a safe environment. We give young people experiences they’ll never forget. The adventure Scouting offers is the chance to experience something different and the opportunity to challenge yourself.

We provide hundreds of activities from abseiling to zorbing (that’s falling out of the sky in a foam ball in case you were wondering) for our young people. If we don’t have our own qualified instructor for an activity we can normally find another Scout Group that does.
How we do it
Scouts are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities as part of a balanced programme. Participation, rather than meeting set standards is the key approach and for any Scout who wants to be recognised for his or her achievements and there are a number of Challenges Awards and Activity Badges they may complete.
Being outdoors is important and half the Programme is dedicated to taking part in both traditional Scouting skills, such as camping, survival and cooking as well as a wide range of adventurous activities – anything from abseiling to yachting. Scouting is about being with friends, as part of a team, participating fully in the adventure and opportunities of life. All this is made possible by the efforts of our dedicated team of volunteer adult Leaders and supporters who are passionate about what they do. It’s something different from the norm, and that’s why a lot of people like it. In fact, it’s what’s makes Scouting the largest co-educational youth Movement in the world. |
But Scouting isn’t just about activities for their own sake. We encourage our young people to feel the buzz of the challenge and then reflect on what that means. Did they have fun? Do they feel more confident? Would they do it again?
And another thing...
4th Ewell has always valued a diverse membership, being the first Scout Group in Epsom and Ewell to welcome girls as Scouts in 1993. Scouting has been a fully mixed sex organisation since 2003, and the experiences of groups around the country have been enriched as a result. Although female adult leaders have been a major force in the movement since the earliest days, the message now is that everyone is welcome to join as a Beaver, Cub, Scout, Explorer or adult.
As well as being welcoming to young people of both sexes, Scouting, and 4th Ewell in particular, has a good deal of experience in ensuring the activities we provide appeal to and challenge all our young people.
4th Ewell and the Scout Association take the well being of young people very seriously. We aim to provide a supportive and open atmosphere in which young people can develop and learn new skills in cooperation with others. All leaders follow a strict code of conduct in supporting young people and we similarly expect all young people to be supportive of, and encouraging to, fellow Scouts regardless of gender, background or faith.
